Fyodor Konyukhov - a first Russian to complete the Grand Slam

      

Fyodor Philippovich Konyukhov was born on the 12th of December 1951, on the seaside of the Sea of Azov which is part of the Black Sea. Fyodor`s father Philip is a descendant of fishermen whose family came from Arkhangelsk Province and his mother Maria comes from Bessarabia.

Since childhood Fyodor Konyukhov has been craving for travelling and discovering the diversity of the world. He undertook his first expedition at the age of fifteen and had crossed the Sea of Azov on a fishing rowing boat. By the age of fifty he has committed more than forty unique trips and climbs and expressed his vision of the world through such creative works as paintings and books.

In 1983 Fyodor was admitted to the Union of Artists (USSR) where he was the youngest member at that moment. Since 1996 he is a member of the Graphic section of the Moscow Union of Artists, and since 2001 – a member of the Sculpture section of the Moscow Union of Artists.

Fyodor Konyukhov is also the laureate of the Gold Medal of the Russian Arts Academy, Honorary Academician of the Russian Arts Academy, author of more than 3000 paintings, and a participant of many Russian and international exhibitions. Besides, he is member of the Union of Journalists of the Russian Federation, a member of the Union of Writers of the Russian Federation and author of nine books. Fyodor`s books are mainly self-written diaries of his travel, including the description of the first in Russian history single yacht circumnavigation.

Konyukhov is a sea captain and yacht captain. He has made four circumnavigations and crossed the Atlantics fourteen times, including one time on a rowing boat. Being an Honored Master of Sports, Fyodor was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples of the USSR and the UNEP Prize "GLOBAL 500" for his contribution to the environmental protection. He was also awarded the UNESCO Prize “For Fair Play”. He is the first and the only person in the world who has reached the five extreme Poles of the planet: 3 times North Geographical Pole, South Geographical Pole, Pole of considerable inaccessibility in the Arctic Ocean, Mt. Everest (Alpinists pole), and Cape Horn (Yachtsmen pole). In 2004 Fyodor set a new world record in single crossing of the Atlantic Ocean on a maxi yacht (14 days 7 hours).

His is listed in the encyclopaedia “Chronicle of Mankind”. Fyodor is a member of the Russian Geographic Society. One more remarkable note about Konyukhov is that he is the first Russian who managed to complete the Grand Slam Adventure which consists of the North Pole, the South Pole, and the Seven Summits. Fyodor is an honoured resident of the town of Nakhodka (the Primorskiy Region, Russia), town of Terni (Italy) and village of Bergin (Kalmykia, Russia). Since 1998 he has been the Head of the Laboratory for Remote Training under Extreme Conditions in the Modern Humanitarian Academy of Moscow.

He is married. His wife’s name is Irina and they have son Oscar, daughter Tatiana, son Nikolay. His grandson`s name is Phillip, granddaughter`s name is Polina, and also he has grandson Ethan and grandson Arkadiy.
