Scientists to Study the Largest Glacier in the Polar Urals and Assess Climate Change

A group of Russian scientists set out on an expedition to Glacier Igan to study its current condition in the face of climate change.

Experts plan to shoot and build a three-dimensional model of the Igan Glacier in order to assess the glacier’s size reduction in recent years.

For 25 years, the Igan Glacier was the stronghold of the international glacier monitoring service. In 2017, researchers managed to perform a project survey with ground penetrating radar, for the first time since 2008. According to scientists, the data on the mass balance of glaciers contribute to the improvement of climate models and the forecasts of global climate change.

The Scientific Center for Arctic Studies was established in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area in 2010.
