The name of the town hints that Vesyegonsk is ancient and has a rich history. Not many things preserved from old times: the ruins of the Kazanskaya Church at Sokolova Hill, a couple of small churches, several pre-revolutionary wooden houses and Vesyegonsky Winery founded in 1914.
The buildings that survived managed to escape the area of flooding or were moved to a new location upon creation of the Rybinsk water reservoir. A sense of “a bear’s corner” quickly gives way to a huge respect to this town.
The love of its residents to their land is felt everywhere: clean streets, a touching Museum of Local History on the territory of the ancient Winery with the statues of Roman gods and modern Italian equipment.
People here strictly adhere to fishing rules. Using electrical rods is subject to severe condemnation, up to serious consequences. Due to the effect of such rod,s fish becomes unable to reproduce and is gradually dying out, the water reservoirs become empty.
Vesyegonsk completely fits the description of a provincial town with a shade of rural past.
Locals themselves gave Vesyegonsk the nickname of “The Bear’s Corner”: reaching this place in the North of Tver Oblast and Rybinsk reservoir can be long and dreary. The place is surrounded by dense forests, meadows, water ... 7500 inhabitants, only one paved road, the remaining roads are covered with sand.
The most popular vehicles for riding along the town streets are bicycles.
The air in Vesyegonsk is really magical, especially on the banks of Rybinka. Tall pine trees, sandy beaches, the wind carries the scents of resin and pine – as if you are not at Mologa Bay, but at Finsky Bay. The forests have an abundance of mushrooms, berries and all animals, the waters of the Bay and many local rivers have plenty of fish.
Phenomenal fishing, by the way, is the key attraction of Vesyegonsky district.
