Officially it belongs to the Ural Federal District and to the Ural economical region as well. The Kurgan Region occupies a territory about 71, 5 thousand square kilometers.

The population is multi-ethnic, but the Russians and the Tartars seem to dominate quantitatively. The only one standing body of the legislative power in the region is The Kurgan provincial Duma. The executive power belongs to the governor. The sitting governor, Oleg Bogomolov, is holding this elective post for the third time.
