Fate and Fortunes of Airports after Domodedovo Explosion
January 26, 2011 11:40

Domodedovo airport attacked by suicide bomber, killed 35 people, was blamed by government in that in that security measures in the airport let the terrorist to get there without examination. There was an idea to withdraw Aviation Security certificate issued to Domodedovo airport. Russian Investigative Committee initiated a criminal case in connection with security measures failure in Domodedovo airport on Tuesday, next day after explosion. But is the airport really guilty of the tragedy, more precise of that the people can enter some parts of the building without examination? Moreover, is it possible to prevent terroristic attckas in the crowded places like international airports by reinforcement security measures?

Airport authorities firmly denied such blames. "We fully met all the requirements in the sphere of air transport security for which we are responsible," Domodedovo spokeswoman Yelena Galanova said. "We are an airport, we deal with air transport and are responsible for air transport security. All the existing requirements were fulfilled and we acted in accordance with the current legislation." And she is right. So, maybe the system of security in the airports is to be improved?

Israel experience
It was offered to introduce a system of "comprehensive checks" based on Israeli and US security procedures at all transport hubs. But it is, first, not easy, rather expensive and time-taking, and second, and not 100% effective. At the moment safety measures in the airport are increased, securities and special equipment scan people and things, and it takes time to get to the building of airport. Examination does not take much time, but standing in lines does. By the way, the lines also could be a good place for bombing. Should we check everybody, who is going to take place in the line? It is absurd.

There are crossing points and metal detector frames in many public places in Israel cities. Not only in Ben Gurion airport, where all vehicles enter the site through a preliminary checkpoint where they are spot-checked by armed guards, not to say about all that happens in the airport. Security is so perfect that there are cases of complaints of discrimination. But even Ben Gurion-style security measures might not be a 100% guarantee from a Moscow-style bombing.

Maybe upgraded security in the airports would not solve the problem?
Aviation experts say it was only a matter of time before a suicide bomber attacked an air hub having caused the sort of carnage as at Domodedovo. Such an event could just as easily happen at almost any other airport in the world with the same horrendous consequence, and is a problem that has long taxed the minds of security professionals the world over, - believes Chris Yates. The Russian bloggers join them and offer their issues. Anatoly Vasserman is sure that total protection from the terrorists is impossible. According to Vasserman, a thing to do do is to upgrade mental level of special services. Well, this is a witty advice, but it could be addressed to everybody.
