June 29, 2007 16:30

Moscow is a huge city not only on the surface but underground also: multiple labyrinths, shelters, secret constructions, abandoned mines, catacombs, and bomb-shelters. The underground spaces of Moscow keep mysteries and legends, which open only to dare-devils ready to start on a dangerous journey.

Exploration of the underground zones created by humans is as much dangerous as going into the natural caves. However, this extreme hobby has faithful followers diggers, real professionals of the underground walks. Diggers can deservedly be considered extreme tourists. For individual underground campaigns it is needed to have special equipment, good physical condition, and being aware of all the possible dangers. Some companies offer a unique chance to go underground together with diggers. Tourists normally get the needed equipment and clothes, and also have preliminary trainings.

Nevertheless, underground Moscow is available to any adventures seeker as there are some unusual museums under Moscow that everyone can visit. For instance, not so long time ago there opened a museum showing to visitors the hidden city with its tunnels and underpasses. It is the GO-42 construction, a secret underground area of the Cold War period, able to function in conditions of nuclear intervention.

The special object GO-42 functioned as one of the offices of the Ministry of the Defence and KGB of the USSR and provided security for the country and handling of troops. The entrance to the underground city, 60 metres deep, is hidden by a reinforced concrete dome. The excursions around the underground Moscow are available with a personal guide who will get you into the underground tunnels. Many explorers of the city underground tell frightening stories about ghosts and strange creatures inhabiting the labyrinths under Moscow, but the legendary constructions, that people have been seeking for decades, cause the biggest interest. The mysterious Soviet governmental constructions that still are kept undercover, lost metro stations, secret tunnels from the Kremlin to the countryside all these are hidden in underground Moscow.

One of the most famous legends is the one about the library of Ivan the Terrible. It exists in Russia for several centuries and is thought of as a greatest treasury. Many scientists-specialists have tried to find it, carefully gathered all mentions in the archives. Some thought the library burnt away in the Moscow fires, others stuck to the version about a plunder during the Polish invasion, and the rest are sure it mixed with some other book archives.

At the same time there are such scientists who have no doubts that the library is preserved in the Kremlin hidings. Let organized diggings in Red Square and inside the historical constructions. The scientists hoped to find an entrance to the underground tunnel leading to the treasures of the Russian tsar. However, the mystery of Ivan the Terrible`s library still remains undiscovered. That is why seeking the underground treasures of the old Kremlin go on nowadays.
