Is Moscow a safe city to visit?
June 30, 2018 18:30

Despite existing misconceptions visiting Moscow is no more dangerous than visiting other European cities.

Like all megapolises, Moscow has enormous latent possibilities for fun and troubles. Some of them are typical, others are particularly indicative for Moscow. They main dangers deal with food, transportation and social communication and conflicts. The food in Moscow is very, sometimes unreasonably expensive, but cheap food should make you think about its quality. Transportation has its own difficulties, especially if you rent a car. What about contacts with the local public, take into account, that there are some things not to demonstrate, to avoid conflict. It doesn't do a credit to Moscow public, though it is very motley.

Food and drinks

First of all, I would not recommend you eating fast food, donner kebab and things like this being cooked in the street. The quality of such food is very doubtful. I do not speak about McDonalds and KFC, which can bring you troubles with weight, but not a food intoxication, like all over the world. Avoid quick-and-dirty. There is a joke among the Muscovites: buy 10 pasties, assemble a dog. Many a true word is spoken in jest. What about places to eat, there are some cafes and restaurants in Moscow to eat relatively harmless for money and health. If you prefer cooking by yourself, try to buy food in supermarkets, and not at food markets. The products seem to be cheaper there, but there are no quality guarantees. By the way, low prices at such markets in some cases are kind of stereotype: I've compared them in the supermarkets and at the stores, and the last ones were lower.

The same should be mentioned about alcohol. Do not buy alcohol, especially vodka outside the stores and if it is too cheap. The consequences can be unpredictable, especially on the outskirts.

Transportation

As it is well-known, the traffic in Moscow is very huge, it is fair for cars and for public transport as well. The streets are crowded with vehicles, the metro trains and buses with the people. The traffic in the Moscow streets is organized not very accurately: if you miss your turn, you may spend a few fascinating hours in the jams, looking for a possibility to return. In connection with it, I wouldn't recommend you renting a car in Moscow, if you don't driver very good. By the way, violation of traffic safety rules is still a norm on the Moscow roads. It looks like it is impossible to drive correctly. What is the reason for that, the lack of driving culture or incorrect road signs and regulations, or both, is an individual problem. Anyway, reality of signs and road marking and reality of the traffic are two different ones.

If you dislike public transport so much that ready to pay for taxi, which is very expensive in Moscow, mainly because of the traffic jams, use the official ones. Not official taxi is not recommended for using by anybody, and especially for the foreigners.

Social contacts

Contacts with the local public is inevitable for a tourist, if you haven't bought an all-included tour and the guided do not leave you until you go to the hotel. If you want to aviod conflict with the local public, which includes the people of very different social and cultural levels. The Moscow public is very motley, and different people can be agressive towards you for different causes.

First of all, don't demonstrate your sexual orientation if it is not traditional very actively outside the gay clubs.

Do not give your handy to make a call if somebody is asking. It is a fake

Finally: the best way not to suffer is to avoid conflict. Don't rely on policemen too much, if something happened. The cops aren't necessarily your friends, as one of the travellers has noticed.

All in all, Moscow is not more dangerous in the whole than other megapolises, and it is impossible to take into account everything that could be dangerous. But it is better to know about some more or less specific problems of this city, some of them I've described here. I haven't touched on such themes like thieves in the crowded places and how dangerous could be demonstrating your expencive I-Phone and money etc because it is rather obvious. We are glad to provide you our services to make your trip to Russia safe and comfortable.
