Forbes has published a ranking of the highest paid hockey players in the NHL. The top ten included two athletes from Russia - Washington Capitals striker Alexander Ovechkin and Artemy Panarin from New York Rangers.

52 years have passed since the Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup in the world capital of hockey - Toronto. For more than half a century, this is the longest non-reward NHL club pause that still lasts, and the second after the 54-year-old New York Rangers break, which ended in 1994. Ages for the Leafs fans.

But Toronto hopes to regain its former glory thanks to a stellar trio. Last year, the Leafs signed a contract with John Tavares, and this year they extended the contracts of young hockey players Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. As a result, in the current season, the trinity receives the highest salaries in the NHL -  it is $ 47.8 million totally. If we take the average annual salary under their contracts, we get a more reasonable amount - $ 33.5 million.

Another Canadian player leads in terms of total revenue, taking into account sponsorship deals. Central striker Edmonton Oilers Conor McDavid will earn $ 18.5 million this season, of which approximately $ 4.5 million will be brought to him by sponsorship contracts and souvenir sales. According to our estimates, McDavid becomes the highest paid NHL player for the second year in a row. In 2017, he signed a new eight-year agreement with Edmonton for $ 100 million. The salary ceiling in the contract is $ 12.5 million, which is noticeably higher than the New York Rangers player's Artemy Panarin ($ 11.6 million).

McDavid got into the NHL in 2015 when Edmonton selected him in a draft under the common first number. An ambitious athlete in the second season in the league earned the title of the highest paid player. The 22-year-old hockey player attracted the attention of marketers - Adidas, a game developer for Electronic Arts, a manufacturer of CCM hockey equipment, a CIBC bank, a Canadian Tire retailer, a manufacturer of sports supplements BioSteel and a telecom company Rogers Communications signed advertising contracts with him.

A total of ten of the highest paid NHL hockey players this season will earn $ 159 million - 10% more than a year ago. Their total income from non-hockey activities will amount to $ 22 million. For comparison, the ten highest paid players in other popular sports will earn much more: in the NBA - $ 600 million, in football - $ 555 million, in the NFL - $ 376 million, in Major League Baseball - $ 315 million. All numbers include sponsorship contracts.

The top ten highest paid NHL hockey players in half a year have been updated. Matthews became the leader among the top 10 newcomers with an income of $ 18.1 million. In the overall ranking, he ranks second after McDavid.
