Rostov coach Kurban Berdyev has been tipped to move to Zenit St Peterburg or Spartak Moscow after his team has managed to climb to the second place in the Russian Premier League, trailing only CSKA Moscow.
The blue side has waltzed up the table despite alleged delays with footballers’ pay.
Berdyev, 63, has been known as a coach imposing tough discipline and building up a strong defense. He led Rubin Kazan to three trophies including two championships in 2008 and 2009 and a Russia Cup.
The longest-serving coach in the Russian Premier League beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Camp Nou stadium in a 2009 Champions League game.
Turkmenistan-born Berdyev is also known for his habit of holding Islamic prayer beads on the bench during matches.
Last season he was signed as coach of bottom of the table side Rostov, taking over from Igor Gamula who moved on to work with the club's youth teams.
He helped the southern team to secure a berth in the Premier League with a 4-1 win over Tosno, but was initially uncertain whether he would continue his work at the club.
Previously, Russia-IC reported that Berdyev was on the coach short-list for Spartak Moscow, along with Dmitry Alenichev, who was eventually picked by the team’s management, and Viktor Goncharenko, from Belarus.
