Population Decline in Russia will be Record High
December 14, 2019 18:44

The natural population decline in Russia in 2019 will be a record high for the past 11 years. Population is declining for second consecutive year, contrary to Putin’s May decrees.

For ten months of 2019, the natural decline in the population of Russia amounted to 259,600 people, as RBC writes  with reference to the data of the Federal State Statistics Service. This means that by the end of the year, the population decline in Russia will be the highest since 2008, when the excess of the number of deaths over the number of births amounted to 362,000 people.

Demographers note that in the last months of the year the situation will not change, and therefore the influx of migrants will not be able to block the large-scale decline in Russians. Thus, the country's population will decrease for the second year in a row, which means that in 2019 the national goal will not be met - to ensure a steady natural increase in the population of Russia. It was placed in the May decree of President Vladimir Putin. In 2018, the population for the first time in ten years decreased by 96,400 people.

From January to September, the migration flow amounted to 193,200 people, failing to compensate for the population decline equal to 236,900 people over the same period. Based on the data of the statistical agency, over the nine months of this year, the population of Russia decreased by 43,700 people.

According to Olga Chudinovskikh, head of the Laboratory for Population Economics, Faculty of Economics, Moscow State University, the peak values of the influx of migrants fall in the spring and summer. Therefore, the likelihood that it will increase in November-December is extremely small. Nikita Mkrtchyan, a leading researcher at the Institute of Demography, is sure that it will not be possible to change the situation before the end of the year, noting that there were no cases when the natural population decline "slowed down" by the end of the year.

Reasons for decline

The main reason for the natural decline  is  a reduction in fertility. In January-October, this figure amounted to 1.250 million people, which is 102 600 less than last year. Experts explain the drop in the birth rate by a decrease in the number of women of reproductive age - mainly representatives of small generations of the 1990s.
