Big City Life: Which Floor to Choose?

People who are planning to buy an apartment in a multi-storeyed building often have the question: which floor to choose? Indeed, what is better for purposes of safety, comfort, convenience – to live on the ground floor, on the last one or somewhere “in the middle”? Let's consider each floor regarding its advantages and weak points.

The 1st  floor is good in terms of various emergencies, because in case of collapses or fires it is easier for inhabitants to leave the house. But the ground floor apartments are often robbed, which means that you have to spend money on security. You may feel dampness, unpleasant smell from the basement, etc. if it is a ground floor in an old house.

2nd floor. Just like the first floor, it is quite safe in the event of emergencies, all the disadvantages of the first floor are also present, but they are not so prominent. The second floor is convenient for the elderly people and families with young children, especially if the house has no elevator, or if the latter does not work - it is not difficult to get here on foot.

3rd floor. Many residents of the old five-storeyed buildings still consider it the best option, a kind of  “golden mean”: it is easy to get here even with a broken or missing elevator, smells and dampness do not penetrate from the basement to the 3rd floor. However, it is already difficult to lift furniture, a washing machine or a refrigerator to this floor on one’s own.

Floors from 4 to 6 are especially good for the environment, automobile exhausts are almost not felt, it is not very noisy here. But if the elevator is out of work, it will be problematic to get home on foot.

7th floor . According to many, 7th floor is the best option for a modern multi-storeyed building (if you forget about the possible elevator breakdown). There is virtually no street noise, it is high enough to forget about automobile exhausts, but not high enough to be afraid of such height.

Floors 8 to 16 floor usually offer the best-lit apartments with a good view. But if a person is afraid of height, it is better not to live on these floors. If there is any plant, power plant or another enterprise with smoky chimneys, these floors will be subject to their negative impact. The floors above 16th are not only well-lit and providing the vest view, but also warm, because, as we know from physics, warm air rises. However, from the point of view of fire safety it not the best choice: it's not only the fact that toxic substances will also rise, but it will be difficult and take long to get down. The last floor is also dangerous in case of fire, but in this case, assistance can be provided from the roof. The risk of leakage increases in old buildings, but in a modern multi-storeyed building it is the floor where you can equip a real fireplace, attach a part of the attic to the apartment, etc.
