The authorities named four possible reasons for the environmental disaster in Norilsk.
Rostechnadzor is considering four possible causes of the fuel spill in Norilsk. The agency believes that the environmental disaster could be associated both with human errors and climatic effects.
During its investigation, Rostechnadzor is considering four versions of the causes of the accident at TPS-3 in Norilsk. This was announced by the head of the Yenisei department of the department Andrei Khodosevich, "RIA Novosti" reports. Khodosevich named these versions:
- Engineering shortcomings that caused incorrect load distribution on the pile foundation;
- Violation during construction and installation work, which led to poor-quality performance of the pile foundation;
- Violation of safety rules during the operation of the facility.

According to Khodosevich, "it is premature to speak about the results of the investigation today, but taking into account what happened, Rostekhnadzor has already taken additional measures to prevent such accidents."
At the end of May, a fire and a fuel spill occurred on the territory of TPS-3, owned by Norilsk Nickel. About 21,000 tons of oil products got into the Ambarnaya River and its tributary Daldykan, which flow into Lake Pyasino. Rosprirodnadzor in July estimated the damage from the incident at 148 billion rubles. The amount of damage increased to 191.5 billion rubles after the claims were voiced by the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography. Norilsk Nickel estimated the damage seven times lower than Rosprirodnadzor - at 21.4 billion rubles.
