Nizhnevartovsk is a Russian city, the administrative center of the Nizhnevartovsk District of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area in the Ural Federal District of Russia.
Nizhnevartovsk is known as the capital ity of oil, with 40 per cent of all Russian oil concentrated here. Samotlor, Russia's largest and the 6th biggest oil field in the world is located near Lake Samotlor in the vicinity of Nizhnevartovsk.
With the population of 269 500 people (2015), Nizhnevartovsk is the 2nd largest city of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area. It is one of the few Russian regional cities surpassing the administrative center of its federal subject (Khanty-Mansiysk) in terms of both population, and tourist potential.
The city was ranked 14th in the Forbes list regarding business comfort in 2010 and took the 4th place regarding the quality of life for the public in Russian cities, following Surgut, Krasnodar and Tyumen in 2014. Nizhnevartovsk ranks 4th among the richest cities of Russia, surpassing even St. Petersburg.
Nizhnevartovsk is equated to the regions of the Far North. It has moderate continental climate. Summers are short and cool, whereas winters are long and frosty. Springs and autumns are short. The average annual air temperature makes 0,9 centigrade below zero.
Along with its powerful oil and gas complex, Nizhnevartovsk has a well-developed industrial branch, in particular construction organizations, and plants producing construction materials and raw materials.
The international airport of Nizhnevartovsk is one of the largest airports in Russia.
