Chelyabinsk is a large city in Russia, an administrative center of the Chelyabinsk Region. It played a key role as the war tank building centre during the Great Patriotic War.

The city’ population is 1 095 thousand persons (as of 2010) (rates the 8th largest city in the Russian Federation) and 1 400 thousand (2005) persons in the agglomeration including Kopeisk and other settlements. The millionth dweller was born here on October, 13th, 1976.

Chelyabinsk takes the area of around 530 square km.

It is a large transport hub with numerous railways and highways and an airport; the Trans-Siberian highway runs there.

Chelyabinsk is an important industrial center with enterprises of metallurgical, mechanical engineering and metal processing, instrumentation, light and food industries.

Places of interest:

Chelyabinsk has the Regional Museum of Local Lore, a number of Art Museums (Art Gallery, the Aleksandrovsky Hall and the Ural Pavilion), the Forest Museum, and the History of Medicine Museum.

There are several theaters in the city, including the Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, the State Academic Drama Theater, the State Drama Chamber Theater, the State Regional Puppet Theater, and the State Theatre of Young Spectators.
