Saratov Region as an administrative unit was formed on the December, 5, 1936 after transformation of the Saratov Territory. Firstly the region was formed as Saratov Vicegerency in 1780, made up of 9 districts. Since 1798 is was Saratov governorate (type of territorial subdivisions of Russia, 1708-1929). In 1934 it was transformed into a Territory, and since 1936 till today the region is called Saratov Region.
