In the last 13 years the republic was seen as one of the more unsafe places to visit. However the authorities of both Russia and Chechnya are trying to change the ingrained image of a “dangerous republic” and its “rebellious Chechens”. Capital Grozny is being fully reconstructed with its center already rebuilt.
Chechnya is still NOT safe for independent travel or sightseeing and those wanting to visit the country should seek expert guidance before planning a trip. Many travel guides such as Lonely Planet and Wikitravel warn tourists against traveling to Chechnya, Dagestan, and neighboring Ingushetia.
Planes to Grozny leave 3 times a week from Moscow's Vnukovo airport. Estimated flying time is 2 hours and 30 minutes. A weekly train leaves from/to Moscow. This train is under heavy security by the Russian military so expect long delays and possible other hassles. Caution must be exercised when traveling by rail in Chechnya due to potential terrorist attacks.
