The Belgorod Region is one of the youngest ones in Russia. The region took its present shape in 1954. Yet, it’s one of the most ancient regions that have rich past abounding in historical events. Several years ago Belgorod turned 1000.
As at the turn of the 16-17th centuries the Russian State was in need of a strong defense fortress, 800km Belgorod defensive fortress was built around the city. Belgorod became an important military and administrative center. Belgorod province was formed in 1727.
As Belgorod emerged as a defense fortress to protect southern borders of Russia, the city was always at the center of events. Belgorod took part in practically all battles and wars that Russia led against Turkey, in Italian and Suisse campaigns of Alexander Suvorov, and in the War of 1812.
At present, the city of Belogorod is a pleasant looking provincial Russian town with a number of attractions that are worth a look.
