The city of Voronezh has been famous with talented people since very old times. Among them there are literary men, musicians, actors, painters, graphic artists, sculptors, craftsmen and art photographers.

It was the birthplace of two peasant poets, who wrote some of the finest examples of Russian poetry — A. V. Koltsov (1809-1842) and I. S. Nikitin (1824-1861). There are several literary museums in Voronezh, including Nikitin House-Museum and monument to Koltsov.

Voronezh is considered to be the native land of Russian regular navy fleet and Soviet paratroops. It was in Voronezh were the world’s first serial production of supersonic airplane Tu-144 and the first Soviet wide-body aircraft Il-86 was approved.

Places of interest

Voronezh has a number of theatres, such as A. V.Koltsov Voronezh Academic Drama Theater, Voronezh State Opera and Ballet Theater, Voronezh State Young Spectator’s Theater, Voronezh Chamber Theater and the Voronezh Puppet Theater. There is also a Stationary Circus opened in 1882 there.

There are a great many museums in the city, among them the Regional Museum of Local Lore, A.L.Durov's House Museum, the Museum of Fire-Fighting, S.A.Yesenin's Public Museum, the Museum of Theatre Puppet, I.N.Kramsky Regional Art Museum, I.S.Nikitin Regional Literary Museum, History and Archeology Museum, etc.
