The Komi Republic is situated in the northeast of the European part of the Russian Federation, at the foot of the Ural mountain range. The Republic is rather vast and its northern territories lie in the region of the Arctic Circle.
The Komi Republic borders with Archangelsk Region in the west, Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansyisky Autonomous Area of the Tyumen Region in the east, Sverdlovsk Region in the southeast, Perm Region in the south, and Kirov Region in the southwest.
The climate here is generally continental, except for the northern districts of the Republic – the climate there is subarctic.
The average temperature is -17 -20C in winter and +11 +15C in summer.
Tundra accounts for 13 percent of the total territory of the Republic, marshes - 16 percent and forests - approximately 69 percent.
Natural resources
The Virgin Komi forests cover 3.28 million hectares of tundra and mountainous tundra in the Urals, as well as one of the most extensive areas of still virgin boreal forest in Europe. This vast area of conifers, aspens, birches, peat bogs, rivers and natural lakes, have been monitored and studied for more than 50 years.
This land is not only famous for it's mountains but for the rivers and brooks. There are hundreds of beautiful lakes in the area - 821 lakes, splendid glaciers and waterfalls.
According to the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation the National Park "Yugud-Va" was established.
The Natural Park Yugud-Va is one of the largest on the Earth. In 1995 it was included into the list of the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO.
The Komi Republic is fabulously rich with coalfields, oilfields, natural gas, shale oil fields, titanium, bauxites, rock salt, gypsum fields, and mineral resources.
