Spassk-Ryazansky is a Russian town (from 1778), the administrative center of the Spassk District in the Ryazan Region.
It is located in the south of Meshchora Lowland, along the shore of Lake Spasskoye in the valley of River Oka, 10 km away from Yasakovo Railway Station, 55 km to the southeast of Ryazan.
The Spassk District harbours the Oka Reserve.
The town with the population of 6971 persons (as of 2014) takes the area of 7 sq km.
History of Spassk-Ryazansky
Spassk-Ryazansky was first time recorded in population census of 1629 as Vaskina Polyana Settlement, or Spasskoye Village that belonged to the Spas-Zarechensky Monastery.
From 1796 it was the district town of the Ryazan Province.
A small ironworks was opened near Spassk on the bank of River Kiritsa in 1737 (it was closed in the 19th century). A mirror factory was started in 1780.
In 1856 the district town Spassk of the Ryazan Province had 4 churches, 546 houses, and 34 shops.
In 1929 the town was named Spassk-Ryazansky.
Architecture and Sights
The town stands on a sandy ridge, which is a steep shore of the Spassky Lake in the ancient riverbed of Oka. The old part of Spassk-Ryazansky stands on the bank of the Oka River. It keeps some houses of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. There is a wooden cemeterial Ascension Church built in the Empire style in the early 19th century.
