Roslavl is a city in the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation, the administrative center of the Roslavl District in the Smolensk Region.
The city with the population of 51 466 people is located 113 kilometers to the southeast of Smolensk. It occupied a hilly area on the left bank of River Ostyor.
Roslavl is a large railway junction at the crossing of lines: Smolensk — Bryansk and Mogilev — Sukhinichi.
Highways of regional and federal importance run through the city:
P120 Oryol — Bryansk — Smolensk;
A130 Moscow — Frontier with Belarus (further to Babruysk, Brest and Warsaw);
P137 Regional Highway Roslavl — Dorogobuzh — Safonovo.
Sightseeing:
One of the city's popular sights is a rock with a historical inscription in memory of its foundation and naming it after the younger brother of Vladimir Monomakh. The rock is set up behind the city park on the Burtsevy Mountain, in the place of the first city fortress, which consisted of palings and ground shafts.
The city has quite a large number of the 19th century architectural constructions, including mansions, estates, hotels, apartment houses and industrial buildings. Besides, Roslavl boasts a number of ancient cult buildings. These are churches, cathedrals, and monasteries, most of which were made of stone at the end of the 18th century.
