Safonovo is a Russian city, the administrative center of the Safonov District in the Smolensk Region.
Safonovo is located on the railway line Moscow — Brest, 102 km to the east of Smolensk and 300 km to the west of Moscow. The city's population makes 43 145 people (as of 2016).
Highway M1 Belarus runs through the city.
The city stretches along the banks of River Vopets, the basin of the Dnieper.
The construction of the Moscow - Brest railroad played the key role for development of the area and the city. The first train plied from Moscow to Smolensk on September 20, 1870. A large railway station was built here and gave the foundation for the city of Safonovo.
