Geography

The Nizhegorod Region is located in European Russia, 400 kilometers east of Moscow on the Volga River. It covers and area of 80,500 square kilometers and has a population of 3.72 million that is 2.5% of the whole population of Russia.

Located at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga Rivers, Nizhny Novgorod is an economical and cultural center of the vast Volgo-Vyatsky region. Other large cities include Dzherzhinsk (40 kilometers west of Nizhny Novgorod), Arzamas (100 kilometers south of Nizhny Novgorod), Pavlovo (75 kilometers southwest of Nizhny Novgorod), Vyksa (175 kilometers southwest of Nizhny Novgorod), Kstovo (30 kilometers southeast of Nizhny Novgorod), Balakhna (35 kilometers northwest of Nizhny Novgorod), and Gorodets (50 kilometers northwest of Nizhny Novgorod).

The climate is moderate, with warm summers and cool winters. The average summer temperature is 20 C (68F) and 12 C below the zero (10F) in winter.
