Salavat is located in the western outskirts of South Ural, in the valley of River Belaya (an inflow of the Kama River), 165 km to the South from Ufa.
It is a railway station on the line Ufa - Murantalovo. Its area is 106 sq. km and the population makes 156.1 thousand people (as of 2010).
Salavat was founded as a settlement in 1948 in connection with construction of the oil refining and chemical enterprises. It has been a city since 1954. It was named after the Bashkir poet of Salawat Yulayev (1752-1800), a participant of the peasant war of 1773-75 under leadership of Yemelyan Pugachev.
