Geography

Novgorod is one of the oldest Russian cities. It is the capital of Novgorod Region and is situated in Northwest Russia near the sources of the River Volkhov in the vicinity of Lake Ilmen. Novgorod occupies the territory 22,333 square miles. The city’s close location to Moscow and St.-Petersburg makes it especially attractive for tourists. A good geographical position, a mild climate, and the beauty of the surrounding landscape create a pleasant atmosphere for rest and creative work. Novgorod has the population of 240,000 people.
