    Znamensk

Znamensk is a town (since 1962) in the north of the Astrakhan Region of Russia, the administrative center of the military testing ground Kapustin Yar.

The town has the population of 32.5 thousand people (2009). It has the railway junction «85 km» on line Volgograd — Verkhny Baskunchak of the Privolzhsky railway. Not far from the town there is a military airdrome.

History of Znamensk

In 1946 decision on building a rocket testing ground there. Building of houses and administrative buildings was started in 1951. From 1.11.1962 the town was called Kapustin Yar and was also known as Kapustin Yar-1. Since 1992 it has been a restricted administrative and territorial entity. In 1993 the town was renamed into Znamensk.
