    Republic of Buryatia

Geography

The Republic of Buryatia is situated almost in the center of Asia and covers an area of 351,300 sq km, which approximately equals the territories of England, Belgium, Luxemburg and Denmark put together, or, if put it some other way – it is almost the same as the territory of German.

Buryatia is a land of green plains, magnificent mountain ranges and numerous rivers. 4/5 of the territory is covered with forests. There are 3 reserves and 2 national parks in the region. The Sayan Mountains stretch through many kilometers and include the highest peak of Eastern Siberia - Mount Munku-Sardyk (3491 m). Another impressive mountain range of Buryatia is the Khamar-Daban Mountains. In Buryatia were found huge deposits of zinc, lead-ore, gold, molybdenum and asbestos. Among less-common metals there are beryllium, strontium, and scandium.

However, the most remarkable thing about geographical position of Buryatia is its situation on the coast of Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world, acknowledged by UNESCO as the part of the World natural heritage.

Almost all rivers in Buryatia, and their number is really great – up to 9 thousand, flow into Lake Baikal, and only the willful Vitim flows into the Lena River. The principal rivers are the Selenge, Uda, Barguzin, Chita, and Angara.

Siberia has an extreme continental climate, with hot summers and cold dry winters. Average temperatures range from -24°Ñ for January to 17°Ñ for July. Average annual precipitation is around 300 mm. Autumn is warm and it is the best time for traveling.
