Zakamensk is a city, the administrative center of the Zakamensk District of the Buryatia Republic in the Russian Federation.
It is located near the border area, and so visitors to the city have to show their passports of the citizens of the Russian Federation or a special permit of the border service.
The city stands in the southwest of Buryatia near the border with Mongolia, at the distance of 404 km from Ulan-Ude, in the central part of Dzhidinsky Ridge. It is located in the mountain and taiga area of the valley of River Modon-Kul, the right inflow of Dzhid.
The city is located in a mountain taiga zone, far away from other industrial centers, in the valley of a small waterway originating in Mongolia. Nevertheless, the ecological situation in the city and its vicinities is extremely adverse. In terms of ecological situation the area of Zakamensk and the former Dzhidinsky tungsten-molybdenum combine is the most disadvantaged part of the Baikal natural territory. The Dzhidinsky combine is a pollutant of all the environmental components.
