Kenozerski National Park

The Kenozerski National park is another open air museum of the region. Fabulous nature and ancient wooden architecture is among the most distinguishing attractions of this park that stretches through the territory of some 1392 sq km. Its hilly landscape once formed by icy shell now is covered with marvelous forest and crystal lakes. One of the most beautiful lakes of the park is the Kenozero. Its high shores provide unforgettable view which becomes even more impressive thanks to numerous local bays with white sandy beaches. Hilly outskirts of this lake are sometimes compared with Switzerland’s landscapes.

Other characteristic traits of the Kenozerski National park are formed by ancient villages with old wooden houses and churches. The park’s complex of Russian wooden architecture is one of priceless examples of cultural heritage preserved for many centuries. The villages charm by their old houses with painted shutters, curved windows and decorations.

Among another attractions of the park are famous “sacred groves”, where still can be observes remains of pagan sacred places. These small forests are carefully preserved by local people and it is prohibited to chop woods here. There are more than 30 such groves on the territory of the park, the concentration hardly be found somewhere else in the world.
