Elena Dementieva was born on 15 October 1981. She is a professional Russian tennis player who retired in 2010. Dementieva is most notable for winning the singles gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijin. She won 16 WTA singles titles and reached the finals of the 2004 French Open and 2004 US Open. Dementieva achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 3.


The well-known film director, President of Russian Cultural Fund and scandalous persona Nikita Mikhalkov has come out with a political message under the pretentious title Law and Truth. Thousands of soldiers and ordinary people were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union during the Secon World War, the highest distinction in the Soviet Union. Miklukho-Maklay, Nikolai Nikolaevich (1846-1888), scientist and explorer, famous Russian ethnographer. Studied languages and characteristics of native inhabitants of Southeastern Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Oceania (1870-1880 years). He made an important contribution to anthropological and ethnological science, discovered New Guinea inhabitants to the civilized society.


A SuperJob.ru survey says most Russians believe alcohol abuse is their most negative character trait(!). 22% of 1800 respondents believe it is so, while 20% claim Russian's curse is their laziness.


The Jewish-born political revolutionary Fanny Kaplan was shot at the age of 28 for an attempted assassination of Vladimir Lenin. She approached the Leader near a Moscow factory and fired three shots at him. Some historians question the actual role of Fanny Kaplan in the crime and many consider the “Kaplan legend” as another Bolshevik canard.
