Elina Avraamovna Bystritskaya was born on April 4, 1928 in the city of Kiev. She spent her childhood in Ukraine. During the Great Patriotic War she got training as a nurse and started to work in hospital. In 1944 she was enlisted in a medical technical school, and in 1947 she got the graduation diploma.
At the same time Elina started being engaged in amateur performances. In 1947 she passed examinations in Nezhinsky Teachers’ College, but as soon as 1948 changed it for the Actors’ Faculty of the I.K.Karpenko-Karogo Theater Institute in Kiev (where she studied at the course of L.A.Oleynik).
In 1953 Elina Bystritskaya graduated from the institute and started working at the Russian Drama Theater in Vilnius (1953-1956), and then at the Moscow A.S. Pushkin Drama Theater (1956-1958). In 1958 she joined the troupe of the Maly Theater and played in the performance Fan of Lady Windermier.
From 1950 Elina Bystritskaya was into filming: In Peaceful Days (1950), Unfinished Story (1955), And Quiet Flows the Don (1958), Volunteers (1958), Everything Remains for People (1963), Summer Residents (1966), Wolves and Sheep (1973), Foma Gordeyev (1983), Guilty though Guiltless (1988), Farewell Tours (1992), Woe from Wit (2002), etc.
Besides her actress’ activities Elina Bystritskaya from 1978 was engaged in teaching: at the M. S. Schepkin Higher Theatrical School and at the Actors’ Department in A.V. Lunacharsky GITIS (State Institute of Theatre Art).
The actress is also known as an active public figure. For seventeen years Elina Bystritskaya was the head of the USSR Federation of Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics and the honourable president of the Billiards Federation, a member of the Council for Culture under the president of the Russian Federation. Today she is an active participant of the Anti-Zionist Committee of the Soviet Community, the president of Charity Foundation in Support of Art and Science, and a professor and academician of several academies. She is the vice-president of the International Foundation for Maternal and Child Health Protection, and an active member of the political organization Stable Russia. Elina Bystritskaya is also engaged in charity works.
She is a merited actress of the RSFSR, the People’s Actress of the USSR, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Elina Bystritskaya is the winner of various prizes, awards and medals. She is an honorary Cossack, a colonel of Cossack armies with the right to bear arms. Elina Bystritskaya is the author of the book Meetings under the Star of Hope.
