 Alexey  Friedman

Born:   February 17, 1940
Deceased:   October 29, 2010

Soviet and Russian scientist, expert in the field of astrophysics and physics of gravitating systems.

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2000). Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences (1972). A winner of the State Award of the USSR (1989), and twice winner of the State Award of Russia (2003, 2008).
Alexey Friedman was born into the family of a surgeon and a teacher of French. In 1963 he graduated from the Novosibirsk State University and went in for postgraduate study course.
From 1966 to 1971 he was a research associate of the Nuclear Physics Institute, the Academy of the Sciences of the USSR.
From 1971 to 1979 he headed a department of  the Irkutsk State University.
Alexey Friedman was a professor of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology from 1979 to 1986 and of the Astronomy Institute of  the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1986.
Since 1991 Alexey Friedman has been a member of the organizing committee of the International Astronomical Union.
Scientific Achievements
In 1975 — 1995 he discovered new types of fluctuations of the gravitating environment.
In 1971 — 1985 he advanced the theory of planetary rings and predicted the existance of later discovered small satellites of Uranium.
In 1972 — 1996 he proposed the hydrodynamic theory of spiral structure of galaxies.
Alexey Friedman is the author of about 250 research papers on plasma physics, quantum physics of solid substance, theoretical physics, cosmology, relativistic astrophysics, dynamics of star systems, gravihydrodynamics, nonlinear dynamics (solitons, shock waves, whirlwinds, and turbulence), dynamics of  galactic gas disks, generation of spiral structure of galaxies, and physics of planetary rings.
Alexey Friedman died on October 29, 2010 and was laid down to rest at the Troyekurovskoye Cemetery in Moscow.
