Eduard Nikolaevich Uspensky was born in Egoryevsk town of the Moscow Region on December 22, 1937.

After graduation from the Moscow Aviation Institute as a certified engineer, Eduard Uspensky earned his living by writing and creating scripts for animated cartoon films. The writer started his career as a humorist: jointly with Arkady Arkanov he had several comic books published. In addition to children's books, Uspensky wrote poems and theatrical sketches.

Eduard Uspensky is the author of scripts for lots of cartoon films, many of which enjoy love of several generations of viewers in Russia. The children’s writer gained great popularity with his story “Gena the Crocodile and his Friends” that was first time published in 1966. Its characters, Gena the Crocodile and Cheburashka, have lived in a series of cartoon films for several decades already.

Other popular characters are friends from “Prostokvashino” Uncles Feodor, Sharik the Dog and Matroskin the Cat. They also became animated characters. Besides, Eduard Uspensky wrote songs for popular children's telecasts “Radio nurse” and “ABVGDeika” and hosted the telecast “In our harbor the ships came”.

The writer’s works have been translated into more than 25 languages; his books have been published in Finland, Holland, France, Japan, and the USA. Besides, Eduard Uspensky for many years worked on a cycle of historical novels telling about the period of False Dmitry and the Time of Troubles.
