Russian stage and film director, scriptwriter, and art director of the Gogol Center

      

Kirill Serebrennikov was born in Rostov-on-Don, in the southeast of Russia on September 7, 1969. He staged his first performance when at school yet, and it was dedicated to Friedrich Engels. He finished school with distinction and graduated from the Rostov State University with honors. He debuted as a stage director in the amateur studio "69" and then took the professional stage.
Within seven years Kirill Serebrennikov staged plays in all the theaters of Rostov-on-Don: Angazhement Theater, M. Gorky Academic Drama Theater, and the Young Spectator's Academic Theater. His stage productions were repeatedly recognized the best performances of seasons and won prizes at all-Russian festivals. Later on he staged classics at the Pushkin Drama Theatre, the Sovremennik Theatre, and the Moscow Art Theatre.
In 1991 Kirill Serebrennikov started his career on TV. Over seven years he released 11 music videos, 2 documentaries, 4 teleplays, 1 video art film, 1 musical telefilm, 3 multiseries projects on music and cinema, and about 100 commercials.

Since 1998 he has been engaged in cinema as well. His works include 6 feature films, 1 documentary and 4 series. Kirill Serebrennikov gained wide fame after the release of his feature films Playing the Victim (2006), which won him the Grand Prize of the 1st International Rome Fim Festival and Yuri's Day (Yuriev Day) (2008), which participated in the main competition of the Locarno Film Festival. His another well-known film, Betrayal (Izmena) participated in the Venice Film Festival.

Since 2008 Kirill Serebrennikov has been teaching courses at the Moscow Art Theatre School Studio. From 2011 to 2014 he was the art director of the Platform project in the Winzavod Center of Modern Arts.

In 2012 Kirill Serebrennikovit was appointed the new art director of the N. V. Gogol Moscow Drama Theater. Soon after taking the post he announced reformatting the theater into the Gogol Center with three resident troupes, and a range of film screenings, concerts, lectures and open discussions.
 
Kirill Serebrennikov is a highly acclaimed modern stage and film director, the winner of numerous prestigious prizes, such as TEFI Award presented by the Russian Television Academy, the Grand Prize of the Kinotavr Film Festival and the Rome International Film Festival, Stanislavsky Award, Crystal Turandot, and others.
