Sylvester Feodosiyevich Shchedrin is the master of the Russian landscape romanticism and lyrical interpretation of nature.

Completely dedicated to landscape romanticism and natural perception environment, Sylvester Shchedrin with his paintings made for decreased interest in landscape among artists of that time.

Shchedrin experienced the dawn of his creativity and recognition. Having graduated from The Arts Academy in Saint Petersburg, he arrived in Italy in 1818 and lived there for more than 10 years, including Rome, Naples, and Sorrento, where he spent the last months of his life. In more than forty paintings Shchedrin depicted the landscapes of Sorrento vicinities, where the town dwellers friendly greeted him as Don Silvestro.

He painted from life a lot and deserved improbable popularity among the Italians wishing to buy his works. Sometimes he had to paint lots of copies of his most successful works, which were quickly bought up.

His famous paintings include New Rome, Mergelline Embankment in Naples, Big Harbor on the Island of Capri, etc. Having lived rather short life imbued with creativity, Shchedrin never managed to return to Russia. Magnificent Italian landscapes reflected the unique beauty of the nature of this land, which meant the promised land to lots of Russian artists.
