 Lyubov Popova

Russian and Soviet avant-garde painter, graphic artist and designer.

      

Lyubov Popova was born into a rich businessman’s family in Krasnovidovo Estate, Ivanovskoye Settlement of the Moscow Province on April 24 (on May 6), 1889.

The girl took first drawing classes from the artist K. M. Orlov, who was a family friend.
 
In 1906 she moved to Moscow to study in S. A. Arsenyeva's grammar school. Lyubov Popova took private classes in Konstantin Yuon’s art school in 1908.
 
In 1910 the young artist went to Italy, where again she took private classes in painting. In 1912 she visited Paris and was engaged in painting under Henri Le Fauconnier and Jean Metzinger.
 
Lyubov Popova was fond of Suprematism and so joined Kazimir Malevich’ group Supremus. Along with other supremacists she painted in the villages of Verbovka and Skoptsy.
 
She designed stage for two performances the Meyerhold Theatre in the style of “staqge Constructivism”: Generous Cuckold staged by Fernand Crommelynck (1922) and The Ground on End staged by Sergei Tretyakov after M. Martine’s play The Night (1923).
 
Her son died of scarlet fever on May 23, 1924. Lyubov Popova also died of scarlet fever on May 25, 1924 in Moscow. She was laid to rest in the Vagankovo Cemetery.
 
December of the same year saw personal exhibition of her works in Moscow. It was a vivid retrospective of one of the most vivid figures of the Russian avant-garde art.
