Since March 29, 2013 he has been the art director of the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater in St. Petersburg.
He graduated from the Radio Engineering Faculty of the Leningrad Aircraft Equipment Institute in 1984 and the Direction and Acting Faculty of the Leningrad Culture Institute in 1989. In 1990 Andrey Moguchy founded the independent theatrical group Formal Theatre, where among others he staged the performance School for Fools (based on Sasha Sokolov's novel) that gained him the Fringe prize of the Edinburgh Festival and the Grand Prix of the International Belgrade Theater Festival.
Andrey Moguchy staged plays in the Alexandrinsky Theatre, the Baltic House Theater, the Finnish Theatrical Academy, the Nations' Theatre, the theater Comedian's Shelter and collaborated with Valery Gergiev's Moscow Easter Festival, worked in the opera, and staged Diana Vishnyova's ballet drama Silenzio.
In the spring of 2013 Andrey Moguchy became the head of the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater (Big Drama Theatre). This is where he staged his highly successful performances The Drunk based on the play by Ivan Vyrypayev, What to Do after the same-name novel by Nikolay Chernyshevsky and Alice featuring the famous actrice Alisa Freindlich.
Awards
His numerous awards include the Golden Spotlights (2000, 2004, 2010, and 2014),
the national theatre award Golden Mask (2001, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2016 (the Best Drama Direction prize for Ivan Vyrypayev's play The Drunk)),
the Grand Prix of the Edinburgh Fringe First Award for the stage production School for Fools (2001),
the Grand Prix of the Belgrad International Theater Festival BITEF for the same School for Fools (2001),
the Grand Prix of the Russian Culture Festival in Nice (France) for his performance Between a Dog and a Wolf (2004),
the Special Prize of the Breakthrough theatrical award for promoting young talents (2016).
In addition to that, Andrey Moguchy was decorated with the Order of Service to the Fatherland (on December 28, 2007) for his merits in cultural and arts development and long-term fruitful activity.
