known Soviet poetess

Olga Fyodorovna Berggolts was a woman with a really tragic destiny. She was born in Petersburg on May 16 (3), 1910 into the family of a doctor. The father greatly appreciated verses of his little daughter and assisted their publication in the factory wall newspaper.

Starting from 1925 Olga Berggolts consisted in the literary youth group "Smena", in which she got acquainted with her future husband B. P. Kornilov. From 1926 the poetess was a student of the High State Courses of Art Criticism at the History of Arts Institute and in 1930 the graduate of the Philological Faculty of Leningrad University moved to Kazakhstan, where she worked in the local newspaper Sovetskaya Step’. After divorce with her first husband and new marriage she returned to Petersburg, where she cooperated with Elektrosila and Literaturny Leningrad newspapers.

A big misfortune in the family – death of the two daughters of the poetess, imprisonment on false charges and death of her husband Nikolay Molchanov – stirred up a new surge in Olga’s literary activity. Her new books: sketches "Years of Storm", collection "Poems", etc. were published.

In 1941-1943 during the military blockade of Leningrad Olga Berggolts worked in the Radio House, the activity for which she was repeatedly awarded. The works created in these years were dedicated to defenders of Leningrad, and in the best way possible conveyed the emotional condition of the city dwellers.

Olga Fyodorovna Berggolts died alone on November 13, 1975.  A street in Nevsky District of St. Petersburg is named after her.
