New German ambassador in Russia

Ulrich Brandenburg, 59, is to be appointed a new German ambassador in Moscow, reports DW-WORLD, with reference to its sources in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany. Mr. Brandenburg is Slavicist and an expert on Russia.
      It is unknown yet, when the new ambassador will take up his duties. Likewise, it is not clarified what kind of policy line Brandenburg intends to take in his activities in the new post.
      Ulrich Brandenburg replaces Walter Juergen Schmid, who worked as ambassador since 2005. Mr. Schmidt is reported to become a German Ambassador to the Vatican.
      As reported by DW-WORLD, this is not the first Ulrich Brandenburgs Russian position. From 1984 to 1988 Mr. Brandenburg worked as a Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Consulate General in St. Petersburg and 1st Secretary (Press/Political) at the German Embassy in Moscow. From 2001 to 2003 he worked as Ambassador, Commissioner for Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia, Foreign Office in Berlin. And in August 2007 he was the Permanent Representative of Germany to NATO.
