During preparation for building the “Nord Stream” gas pipeline and exploring bottom of the Baltic sea, engineers discovered at least twelve ancient sunken ships.
Most of the ships were built in 17-18 centuries, however, some of them could have spent a thousand years at sea bottom. Three ships have intact hulls. All findings lay deeper than 100 meters.
Ships are located eastwards from the Gotland Island outside Swedish territorial waters, but within its economic waters. The pipeline doesn’t touch any of mentioned ships, however, archeologists worry that valuable findings can be damaged during pipe installation.
