The Second International Naval Show (IMDS-2005) held in St. Petersburg won some serious contracts for the participants. These include military equipment for China and Mexico and missiles for Iranian submarines.
Some 300 Russian defense companies opened up to the international community to demonstrate its strength and convince partners of the high quality of their products. The debut of new generation submarine called St. Petersburg, an offspring of Project 677 Lada and its export colleague named Project 1650 Amur, put up for sale to India, did not score, although attracted much attention at the show. India opted for the six French Scorpene subs running into $1.8-2bn. Interestingly, the submarine embodies around 170 state-of-the-art patented technologies and moves about almost without any noise. It took 7 years to accomplish the piece of diesel-run military art.
Anyway, Admiralty shipyards managed to strike a $1m contract with China to ship components for diesel-electric submarines. Almaz, St. Petersurg-based shipbuilding company, attempted to negotiate a contract for two Zubr Class Air Cushioned Landing Craft. Two patrol cutters could go to Mexico as well as to Cameroon.
Some $80m could arrive from a possible contract with Iran to repair and modernize their submarines, including the shipment of new components and installation of the Club-S anti-ship missile complex. The negotiations are held by Rosoboronoexport, reports Kommersant. Last year, the imports brought some $5.12bn, and only 24% came from naval production
