Collaboration of Russian scientists from Saratov and Moscow with Arkansas University resulted in a new technique, which allows reducing the possibility of metastases formation.
Cancer tumor is dangerous due to its ability to form metastases, which spread all over an organism with blood and start new tumors. Researchers suggest using nanotechnologies to prevent metastases from forming.
The technique was tested on lice – infected animals received synthetic constructions, which consisted of three components: a magnetic nanoparticle, an antibody for a tumor and a carbon nanotube, covered with gold, via injection. Antibodies formed bonds with cancer cells, and then tiny magnets promoted accumulation of gold-plated nanotubes near malicious cells. After that, cancer cells could be studied by means of photoacoustics and then killed with laser heating golden particles.
