Yegor Gaidar

Yegor Gaidar, the Russian economist, who is believed to be in charge of Shock Therapy reforms in early 1990s, died this morning aged 53 in his house outside Moscow.

The former Prime Minister is reported to have suffered a blood clot. Yegor Gaidar was the architect of the tough market reforms, that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union. The result of his policies was the devaluation of people's savings and galloping inflation. Still, his reforms lay a foundation for transition from Communism to Capitalism.

After leaving the office, Yegor Gaidar took part in a conference in Ireland in 2006, where he suddenly fell ill just days after Litvinenko was poisoned. After recovery Gaidar claimed he became a victim of some enemies of the Kremlin.
