Last week a new innovative scientific exhibition called “Podzemnoe tzarstvo” (Underworld) opened in St. Petersburg’s Dokuchaev Central Museum of Soil Science.
      
      The exhibition reveals complex natural relationships, which interact in “our planet’s skin” – soil. The Underworld is a tunnel in soil, where visitors meet soil inhabitants, which perform various ecological functions. The exhibition combines traditional museum techniques (models and dummies) with modern information technologies (animation films, lightboxes and lighting effects) and contemporary art in order to show visitors the wonderful world of soil.
      
      The exhibition consists of three parts. First one shows chernozem (soil under steppe vegetation) dwellers – moles, hamsters, snakes, earthworms and etc. The next part reveals soil microworld with microorganisms, which live in soil. The third part shows life of forest soil dwellers.
