Stalin Painted Over Nudes in Works by Russian Artists

The soviet dictator Joseph Stalin censored and “corrected” works by Russian artists of the 19th century with his own hands.

In the mid December there will be an exhibition with reproductions of paintings by Serov, Ivanov and Surikov, on which Stalin painted over nude places and wrote viperous comments.

Thus, for example, in one of the portraits Stalin painted underpants to a nude man and wrote: “Do not sit your naked ass on stones! Join Komsomol and Rabfak! Give the guy a pair of drawers! J. Stalin”.

As a journalist from La Repubblica supposes all those remarks testify either homophobia or hidden homosexuality of Stalin.
The organizers exhibitions have not revealed the source of the reproductions so far, but handwriting examination verified their authenticity.
For the 130th anniversary since Stalin’s birthday 19 paintings bearing his “imprints” will be exhibited in the Marat Gelman Gallery in Moscow. According to the curators of the exhibition the drawings were found in a private collection, but the name of its owner and the history of the file with Stalin’s “graphic art” are kept secret so far.
