The Gold of Bactria exposition presenting major finds from the royal necropolis located on Site of Tilla Tepe in Afghanistan will be displayed in the State Hermitage Museum and Moscow Kremlin Museums in 2011.
Baktria is the eastern most Greek Kingdom located in what is now the province of Balkh in Afghanistan.
Excavations of the legendary Tilla Tepe (i.e. Gold Hill) were carried out by the Soviet and Afghani expedition in 1978.
The researchers found out an intact luxurious necropolis with abundant funeral implements: altogether they unearthed about 20 thousands items of gold, including jewelry and coins.
Judging by the coins the necropolis dates back to the 1st century AD. The complex became one of the most significant and richest archeological discoveries of the second half of the 20th century.
Since 2006 the exhibition of Tilla Tepe finds belonging to the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul has been touring: it has already been to France, and currently it is being displayed in the USA.
