A monument to the outstanding Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich has been just unveiled in the Vyborgsky District of Saint Petersburg. The sculpture created by Konstantin Garapach has been set up at the crossroads of Shostakovich Street and Engels Prospect.
The composer’s grandchildren and his son Maxim Shostakovich took part in the unveiling ceremony.
Dmitri Shostakovich is depicted sitting amidst music books on a bench. The monument portrays the composer at the age when he created the legendary Seventh (Leningrad) Symphony.
The Seventh Symphony was composed in 1941-1942 and performed by the Orchestra of Leningrad Radio Committee during the blockade of Leningrad. The composer was 36 years old at that time.
The 100th anniversary since the composer’s birthday was celebrated in 2006. Memorial tablets were set on the houses where he had lived and worked. In addition to that, Dmitri Shostakovich Museum was open in Petersburg.
