Unique Collider of Heavy Ions to Be Launched in Dubna

The Joint Institute of Nuclear Research, located on Dubna city of Moscow Region, will open new unique colliding facility for heavy ions in 2015.
The facility, known as NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility), allows studying phase transitions from common nuclear matter to quark-gluon matter, which existed in the early Universe. These two types of matter can coexist like water coexists with vapour in the form of mixed phase. New facility is aimed a t studying properties of mentioned phase transitions, as well as, mixed phase for this transition.
NICA facility will host collisions of beams of gold ions, accelerated towards each other up to 5.5 gigaelectronvolt per nucleon. These collisions will be studied by means of MPD (Multi-Purpose Detector) device, located at meeting point of ion beams.
Such experiments could not be conducted on Large Hadron Collider, since it provides extremely high temperatures and very low densities on matter phase diagram. NICA will have energies, significantly lower than LHC, physicists from JINR say.
