The Sukhoi Superjet 100 airplane has been tested in highlands of Armenia at “Shirak” airport, located 5000 ft (1524 m) above sea level.
The airport is a unique facility, rated ICAO first class. Mountains surround the airport, that is why takeoff and landing can be performed only from the southern side of the field. The takeoff/landing strip is 3220 m long and 45 m wide.
Test programme included performance of continued takeoffs and "missed approach" manoeuvre with one working engine. Most manoeuvres were performed with simulated engine failure, including those with maximum takeoff weight. The plane confirmed its ability to work under highland conditions.
Sukhoi SuperJet 100 will replace Tu-134 civil airplane with first two planes shared between Russian “Aeroflot” and Armenian “Armavia”.
