Aleksandr Sokurov has launched production of his version of the famous Faustus to be shot in the suburbs of Prague.
Faustus will become the closing part of the film tetralogy, in which the film director includes his Molokh (1999), Telets (2001) and Solntse (2005). It is a large-scale project, for which they will have to construct a whole town. Making the settings will take the lion's share of the film budget, which totals ?12 million.
“The most important and the most complicated thing was to launch the project and start working, because the film crew is really international. They speak four languages here: actors speak German, the cameraman speaks French, the maintenance staff speak Czech, and English remains the language for international communication” - the film producer Andrey Sigle reported.
German actor Johannes Zeiler stars as Faustus; Anton Adasinsky, the founder of Petersburg theatre Derevo, plays the userer; Hanna Schygulla, the star of Fassbinder’s films, appears as the userer’s wife; Russian-born Isolda Dychauk plays Margarita.
The crew will also work in Vatican and Island. By summer 2010 the film is planned to have been completed.
